March 2017 - Spring News & Updates

March has been quite a busy month for us at Sonshine Hacienda!

In order to update our certification as a Casa Hogar, we have to meet several requirements. We completed the updates begun last month to make our first-floor wheelchair accessible. In addition, a week was spent updating and weatherproofing our electrical system. Several of our staff members have made trips to Mexicali for day and week-long classes, ranging from administrative instruction to health and sanitation in the kitchen. We’ve added new signage and installed security guards on all of our windows. We have passed all of our inspections so far, and have just one more inspection to pass before our certification is complete!

February 2017 Newsletter - Community Helps Shape Who We Are

The first week in February was a busy and blessed week for Sonshine Hacienda, and served as a reminder how important our connections are in the San Felipe community.

On February 7, the San Felipe Scorpion Club held their annual Fun Day. The Scorpions are a group of individuals with 4-wheel drive vehicles who provide rescue service in the desert. Fun Day is a break from the serious nature of the group, an opportunity to drive through an obstacle course, play bingo, bid on auction items, and enjoy a lunch of fully-loaded baked potatoes. The weather was perfect for this outdoor event, 120-plus people came out to enjoy the fun, and proceeds benefitted Sonshine Hacienda.

While Scorpion Fun Day was taking place, another group was busy setting up the annual yard sale to benefit Sonshine Hacienda. The yard sale was held on February 9-10 at the home of John and Bonnie Gilbert and 99+1 Ministries. Over 40 volunteers came out to help organizers Dwayne and Darlene Tucker, and even more contributed items to be sold. Year after year this continues to be one of the largest fundraisers for Sonshine Hacienda.

To wrap up the week, El Padrino, a local pizzeria and Italian restaurant, hosted an afternoon of music, prizes, and great food on Saturday, February 11, sharing their proceeds with Sonshine Hacienda. We are so grateful for the love that Padrino has for Sonshine Hacienda.

We can’t imagine a more loving and supportive community than San Felipe. The week was like one big hug of community support for the children!

January 2017 Newsletter - Visitors & Volunteers

DAY OF THE KINGS

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem… On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. –Matthew 2:1,11

Happy 2017! We kicked off the New Year with a time of celebration. January 6 is a special day in Mexico. You’ve probably heard it called “Epiphany,” but we call it “Dia de los Reyes” – Day of the Kings. This is the day we celebrate the arrival of the three kings – or Magi – to honor the newborn Christ child.

One of the traditions of this holiday is to eat “Rosca de Reyes” – King’s Cake. Hidden inside the cake is an effigy of the baby Jesus. Our kids eagerly took their pieces of cake, hoping to find the tiny, plastic figurines.

To help us celebrate the holiday, our dentist, Dr. Molina, and several of her clients came to Sonshine Hacienda. And just like the Magi brought gifts to the Christ child, our guests arrived with gifts for the children and hot chocolate, serenaded us with their musical talents, and even brought along a hot dog cart for lunch.

We are ever reminded of the love and support that comes from our community. God continues to stir the hearts of individuals, businesses, and groups to care for His children. Everyone who walks through our doors, everyone who prays for Sonshine, everyone who spreads the word about what God is doing in this place is a blessing to us and our children.

Feliz Navidad from Sonshine Hacienda

The faces may change from year to year, but the reason we do this work does not. And that reason is the reason for this season!

May the wonder of Christ’s birth renew your spirits this Christmas and may your days be filled with His love.

From our home to yours, we wish you a Feliz Navidad - a Merry Christmas - and a prosperous New Year!

Changes at Sonshine Hacienda

I don't think anyone likes change in their lives – at least I know I don't! But we have been through a number of major changes this past year.
A great deal of stress was placed on us by DIF, the government monitoring wing of the Casa Hogars (children’s homes) in Mexico. We have had to make weekly trips to Mexicali for meetings and write multiple manuals – binders full of procedures – in order to comply with new requirements. It has been a long process, but in spite of many challenges, we seem to have made progress. We are so thankful to Alvaro and Diana, our administrators, for their hard work in getting the initial procedure manuals completed, and for Mama Imelda for helping continue the work they started.
In June, Diana and Alvaro resigned their position as administrators at Sonshine Hacienda. It was so sad to see them leave us, but we also understand that they need to follow the Lord's will for their lives. We wish them well and will remain friends.
We are excited to share with all of our supporters that we are welcoming some dear old friends to the management team at Sonshine Hacienda: Imelda and Bernardo. They are joining us as administrators. They will work with us (Gary and Karen) as well as our new missionaries, Randy and Katie, who will be arriving in November. We have also added another individual to our staff who will help with accounting.
As if that weren’t enough change, we are prepared to grow in size at Sonshine Hacienda. We have been told that our Casa Hogar will be receiving considerably more children in the near future. So hang on tight, and get ready for an exciting time ahead!
We are thrilled about the new opportunities that are available and are incredibly grateful for your support through it all. God is in control, and in Him we place our trust. PRAISE THE LORD!
