Summer 2018 - Newsletter

SUMMER FUN!!

The children are having fun during their summer break. Going to the beach or to the pool are popular pastimes. To celebrate the end of the season, we have been blessed to have had two pool parties. We love those of you who sponsor the parties!

SWEET FIFTEEN - QUINCEAÑERA

One of the highlights for a young Mexican girl is when she turns fifteen and celebrates her Quinceañera..  For those of you who are not familiar with this custom, it's a traditional rite of passage between girlhood and womanhood, similar to the southern custom of the debutante in America.  Earlier this year, we were honored to join Perla in celebrating her Quinceañera. This included a ceremony, along with beautiful dresses for Perla and her attendants. Afterwards there was a wonderful fiesta filled with music, dance, and food.

Sonrise Christian Academy
Our school is now taking shape! We have come a long way  from the groundbreaking, and now the building is moving along well. It has also been a blessing to the local economy , as we have employed local contractors to help with construction.  The building is funded completely by donations and will be a place where children from both Sonshine Hacienda and the local community can come to get a quality, Christ centered education.  If you wish to donate to the completion of the school, please mark Sonrise School in the memo line of your check and forward to the address below.

Our Padrinos

It is now time to return to the classroom. We have been blessed with donations of needed school supplies.  A special thanks goes to our beloved Padrinos (Godparents). The Padrinos are a group of teachers and professional people who are committed to sponsoring a child at Sonshine Hacienda.  This commitment includes providing school uniforms and shoes,

along with outfits and shoes for sports. They are generous benefactors, gifting the children with not only additional outfits, but with backpacks and lunch boxes. Each year, on the week before school starts, Profesora Norma hosts a dinner for these sponsors.  This year the dinner was exceptional, and the children were thrilled with their wonderful gifts!

Updates:
Mari, daughter of our Administrator, Imelda, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. She is currently undergoing radiation treatments to shrink the tumor for possible surgical removal. Please keep Mari and her family in your prayers as they go through this stressful time. We have a fund to help pay for Mari's treatments. If you wish to help, please mark "Mari"  on your check and send it to Marketplace Missions at the address below.

Transitions:
We would like to say a huge thank you to Randy and Katie Ubry-Terrell for their great work at Sonshine.  They have moved on to new opportunities in the States. We wish them well and keep them in our prayers!

We would like to introduce some longtime friends of Marketplace Missions and Sonshine Hacienda. Jack and Joanne Weatherford have relocated to San Felipe and are working closely with Sonshine.  Welcome to the family!

FUNDS NEEDED
As often happens during summertime, donations are running low.
We need your help!

THANK YOU!
for your generous support of Sonshine Hacienda and Sonrise Christian Academy.

FALL 2017 - When Dreams Become Reality

If you follow us on Facebook, you know our biggest news lately has been the building of a new dining room. This plan has been in the works for over a year, ever since DIF told us that they would be closing down casa hogars in surrounding areas and wanted to start bringing us more children. We have beds for 50 children, but currently only have one great room that serves as our dining room, homework area, play room, TV room and entertaining space for large groups. Obviously we need more space if we are going to increase in number by 20-30 children!

The building project moved from an idea to reality on the first of October. A group from Washington state, led by former Sonshine Hacienda staff member Paul Korneliussen, arrived to begin demolition. A space that originally housed our laundry, and was later turned into a pantry, was gutted and the walls removed. Paul and his team, which included Don and Jay, also from Washington, did the important work of preparing the area, laying out a foundation and framing the walls that will hold our new room together.

After a week of work, the Washingtonians passed the (literal and proverbial) hammer off to a group from Colorado, which included Pastor Guy, Richard, Norman, and our dear friend Phil Varnak, who divides his time between Colorado and San Felipe. With the groundwork laid by the Washington group, progress became quickly visible as walls, a roof, windows and doors formed our new dining room within the week. Materials were a little short, however. The guys hated to leave with just a foot of roofing to go, but Phil and Sonshine Hacienda missionary Rand Ubry-Terrell promised to complete the work.

In the week to come, Phil and Rand not only finished the roof, but added in electric, plumbing and insulation. Phil recruited some members of his men’s group and they came to put up the drywall. A local contractor then came to put up sheetrock and lay tile.

We still have work to do, but we are thrilled by our progress and by the many hands that came together in love to work on this project alongside of us!

We Couldn't Do It Without You!

We do our best to make plans and follow through, to keep you updated about our needs and invite you to celebrate our victories, but every day seems to bring new challenges, blessings and adventure so that it’s hard to keep up with it all. But one thing is for sure… none of this would be possible without you! We thank all of you for your faithfulness to pray for and support Sonshine Hacienda in the unique way that God has specifically called you. Whether it is through financial donations or through prayer, school supplies or clothing, sharing the newsletter or coming to visit, every one of you is making a difference in the lives of the children entrusted to our care. GRACIAS! THANK YOU!

Another Sonshine Miracle

Many of you know and love our children, Christian and Nidia, and no one was more excited than they were to meet their baby sister Maria Milagrosa. (Milagrosa is Spanish for Miracle.) “Milly” joined our family on June 20 and we all fell instantly in love! She is 8-months-old and loves to roll over and blow raspberries. We guarantee she will win you over with her toothy grin!

April 2017 - Celebrations and Updates

Dia Del Niño

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." –Matthew 9:14

On April 30, we celebrated "Del Dia Del Niño", the Day of the Child. This is a day to honor the inherent rights that all children have. It is why Sonshine Hacienda exists -- because we believe that all children have a right to life, health, education, affection, protection and a safe, positive, nurturing home free from violence, drugs or abuse of any kind.

Traditionally on Del Dia Del Niño, children wear new outfits, break piñatas, eat cake and similar festivities. Thanks to the help of friends, our children got to do all of these! Last week, the Padrinos ("godparents" who work in the community) visited, bringing along gifts of new clothes and shoes that the kids could wear on the 30th of April, and a piñata brimming with candy. And thanks to Bob and Gloria Mater, local friends who provide us with a birthday cake on the last day of every month, we also had a huge dessert to share.

Sonshine Hacienda would not exist without all of you. Your support, your prayers, your gifts, your hearts enable those of us who are "on the ground" to be your hands and feet, ensuring that every day is a day that honors the rights of these children.
